IDENTIFICATION OF AMPHIBIANS

GIPUZKOA GUARDS RECEIVE AN AMPHIBIOUS IDENTIFICATION COURSE Amphibians are the most threatened vertebrate group in the world, according to the latest publications the proportion of species and/or populations of amphibians is about to reach 40%, and Gipuzkoa is not one exception, since a third of the species are included in the Basque Catalog of Threatened Species, and the proportion almost reaches 60% if we include the species included in the Directive habitats europea

The work that the rangers could do in the research and management of amphibians is a well-known fact, so members of the Herpetology Department of the Aranzadi Science Society organized a course together with the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa and Fraisoro School the formation of the guards. Complying with the protocol measures in force, the activity has been held in two days, in two small groups and the practice will be carried out in the spring of 2021, coinciding with the reproductive period of an important group of amphibian species.

As it is being realized with forest guards of other nearby provinces, the idea of ​​the course is to increase knowledge about amphibians, a group of fauna that does not enjoy special sympathy on the part of the general public, being able to use the information obtained in future work of divulgation and management of amphibians.
